At the UMP convention dedicated to Europe where she was invited in January this year, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel wished her “friend Nicolas” all the best for the presidency of the European Union. France will hold the Presidency of the Union from 1st July.
Merkel went on to congratulat her French host for having had the courage to affirm that the Lisbon Treaty was a political decision and that France did not need a new referendum. She congratulated him for not allowing the French people – who rejected the European Constitution, a document 96% the same as the Lisbon Treaty – to have their democratic say on the new Treaty. Nicolas Sarkozy then congratulated her back for her precious contribution to the elaboration of the treaty.
